June 05, 2018: Mr. Basir Ahmad Hamdard, First Secretary & Head of Political Affairs at the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, joined with great pleasure and honor the Conversation Series on “Human Rights at Crossroads: Navigating New Challenges and Sustaining Past Successes” by Andrew Gilmour, Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights and Heads of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in New York. The conversation was held at the United Nations University Tokyo’s headquarters in Shibuya, Tokyo, and also, celebrated the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) which turns 70 this year.
There have been incredible economic, social, cultural, and political achievements regarding human rights since the implementation of the UDHR. Governments, including the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan’s, have taken important steps to monitor human rights records adherence and to ensure greater accountability, transparency, and participation in public life. Mr. Hamdard welcomed those changes with great pleasure. He also assured all participants that Afghanistan will continue to advocate for human rights, and take essential steps towards achieving such goal. Mr. Hamdard also thanked the UN University Tokyo and Mr. Secretary-General Gilmour for the invitation and the possibility to experience such informative and important conversation about the challenges ahead for human rights. Conversely, the UN University as well as Mr. Gilmour thanked Mr. Hamdard for his presence and welcomed Mr. Hamdard for his assurance and Afghanistan’s progressive steps to ameliorate the human right situation within the country. Both sides agreed to continue the conversation and to tackle the challenges ahead for human rights.
In addition, Mr. Hamdard had the great pleasure of meeting Mr. Adam Day, Senior Policy Adviser at the UN University Center for Policy Research who also held a conversation about examining the challenges facing the UN’s Human Rights’ agenda in today’s world. The conversations followed a pleasant buffet which Mr. Hamdard enjoyed to the fullest.
